A Royal Connection to Our Maritime Heritage

During a historic visit to Otama in 2003, HRH Princess Anne shared her deep appreciation for the submarine and its profound historical significance. Recognizing the vital importance of preserving our nautical past, she was particularly moved by the tireless restoration efforts of the Western Port Oberon Association.

Inspired by their dedication, Princess Anne graciously accepted the role of patron for the Victorian Maritime Centre project, cementing her ongoing commitment to the initiative.

A Symbol of Service

During the ceremony, a de-commissioning white ensign was presented to Her Royal Highness—a powerful symbol of the submarine’s proud service history. Today, this treasured artifact is proudly on display at the Victorian Maritime Centre’s Crib Point museum, offering visitors a tangible connection to the submarine’s legacy and the incredible hard work of everyone involved in its preservation.
