First, discover a truly meaningful mission. The Western Port Oberon Association (WPOA) is a registered not-for-profit organisation. Specifically, we are on a mission to bring a vital piece of Australian maritime history home. Consequently, we are raising funds to restore the MV Wyuna. She currently sits in Tasmania. Therefore, we want to return her to full seaworthy condition so she can proudly sail back to Victoria.
To begin, shipbuilders constructed the Wyuna in 1952 for the Port Phillip Pilot Service. Subsequently, she served faithfully from 1953 to 1979. For example, she operated off Queenscliff, Williamstown, and the Yarra River. Later, she trained future generations of seafarers at the Australian Maritime College until 2004. In 2013, the previous owners generously donated her to the WPOA. As a result, we can now preserve her and return her to home waters.
Importantly, the Wyuna isn't just a museum piece. Instead, she holds a powerful new destiny as a wellbeing project for Australian veterans. Once our team restores her, veterans will maintain the vessel. Furthermore, they will train to become part of her active crew. Meanwhile, when the ship docks, she will host community and youth groups. For instance, she will offer immersive overnight stays to experience life aboard an operational ship.
However, before our veterans can take the helm, the Wyuna needs critical hull and mechanical restorations. This is vital to safely journey across Bass Strait. While our passionate WPOA volunteers donate 100% of their time, we urgently need financial support. Ultimately, we direct every single dollar you give straight toward restoration supplies. Therefore, please donate today and help us bring the Wyuna home!
